Reading comparative reviews from Car & Driver January 2009, Motor Trend January 2009, and Road & Track September 2008, the top sporty compact cars in 2009 were the VW GTI, Chevy Cobalt SS, Mazdaspeed3, and the Subaru WRX.
The original pocket rocket was the VW GTI. Another well known one was the Honda CR-X Si. The CR-X Si TV commercial in the 1980's was done at the Bonneville Salt Flats with the car taking off vertically like a rocket. After years without it, Honda now has a new hybrid version.
Our preferred approach to rating these cars is to find the best available online comparative reviews and road tests. We also prefer reviews and road tests that are less than two years old which means those published in 2008 or later are OK for the time being.
